Winter Pics

Winter Pics
The pictures below were taken on Saturday February 28th 2004. There had been a week's worth of snow, and the temperature was very low. It is very unusual to have this ammount of snow lying so close to the coast, especially the West coast which is kept relativly mild due to the Gulf Stream.

This picture was taken at Carbost. The loch was like glass and the mountains were very picturesque. Carbost is well know as the home to the Talisker distellery, the only distillery on Skye. We were actually doing a bit of fishing off the pier but gave up after 45mins due to the snow showers and biting wind!

We moved on to Sligachan. Here is a view of the Cuillin ridge from the Sligachan hotel. Again the scenery was great, with around 30cm's of lying snow in places.

Looking South East towards the Cuillin outliers. Fantastic.

A bit of an arty shot from under the old road bridge at Sligachan. Progress meant that when the main A87 road was widened from single track in the 70's a new concrete bridge was built. Thankfully the old stone ones were left, and they are much more elegant than the modern equivalent is. No doubt they will last longer to.

This final shot is of Ben Tianavaig, which is opposite Portree. Again, it is quite unusual for this ammount of snow to be lying so close to the coast. The mountain looks fantastic though, and is a great walk on a nice day.
